This all sounds like common sense to me, stuff our ancestors knew and practiced. Have you read Gene Logsdon? He loved cows for the same reasons you do.
thanks for commenting,! It does feel like common sense, which is of course is not all that common anymore. I get that feeling often when I'm working on permaculture design courses. I think most thoughtful farmers of the age that I tend to ping against, post enlightenment anyhow, were doing a lot with a lot of common sense. Gene Logsdon is someone that I respect deeply, and who's passing affected me fairly greatly. I've read nearly all of his work and often called him my adopted grandfather. One of my greater laments is I was not able to meet him in real life.
It's great to find another Logsdon fan. He was a huge influence on me, and though he didn't associate himself with the term "permaculture" I learned more of it from reading his books than from anyone else besides Mollison. Welcome to substack btw!
Thanks Lynn, the 1st 48 hours or so have been really nice. I used to blog an immense amount on Wordpress 10 or 15 when I was first starting my journey and it looks like this format has a lot of the goodness of the old blog culture. I'm enjoying your articles.
